One of my favourite books is All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven. There is a scene I always go back to. Flinch and his younger sister Decca are in her room and they are cutting out words from books around the house. All the bad, unpleasant words are taken out with scissors and the novels are left with gaps and pleasant and happy words inside. Words like morning, lovely, lighten. This is something I wish I could do. Take a book and cut out all the evil and unpleasant words and leave the good ones. But I can't do this. It's not so much a physical limitation, but a mental one. I love books very much and cutting one apart, possibly ruining one forever with these actions, is something I can't quite get a handle on just yet. But I love the idea of it all.

I would like to cut out all the bad things that happened to me or the bad things I’ve done. But in reality life is both good and bad. Sometimes life is suffering (as Jordan Peterson says) so that we can grow and become better. So even though I would like to cut the bad, no one can, we have to overcome the bad and do good whenever possible.
ReplyDeleteGreat thoughts! You could totally practice cutting books by using cheap old books from the thrift store or library sale books! Maybe try to buy a used duplicate book of one you already have so you'll still have the complete one!
ReplyDeleteSuch an interesting concept to think about for sure!
